Edinburgh City Guide

Welcome to Edinburgh.

Nicknamed “The Athens of the North”, Edinburgh is Scotland's capital city, the seat of the Scottish Parliament and has a population of just under 500,000.

It is home to Edinburgh Castle, The annual International Edinburgh Festival, Princes Street, Murrayfield - the home of Scottish Rugby and not forgetting Edinburgh Zoo which now has 2 adorable Panda Bears in residence!

The Old Town and New Town districts of the city were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 in recognition of the unique character of the Medieval Old Town and the planned Georgian New Town. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city and it has 40 designated Conservation Areas.

Perhaps most famously, each August it hosts the Edinburgh Festival, a collection of official and independent festivals which brings around 500,000 people to the city. Edinburgh is the second most visited place in the UK, and attracts over £1m overseas visitors each year.
